And so she held her breath once again,
Hoping that the wave of emotion seemingly taking over her body subsided.
She opened her eyes to see flicker of day light;
It felt like she was drowning.
The world around her dipping and swaying,
Pressure pushing hard against her chest, her head swimming in a drunken haze.
She hoped that she'd escaped feeling this again,
That she had control and yet her she was, feeling weightless, helpless.
She kicked her feet hard, praying that it would push her closer to the surface.
Running out of energy to fight;
Her mind began to slip.
Her lungs burned as they fought against a lack of air.
Her senses dulled to nothing;
Slowing but surely losing grip.

A Year On: Don't Look Back In Anger
So here we are.
I'm actually really surprised at how 'okay' I feel.
The first three months were HELL. In the midst of them I just couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I felt like I would be stuck in that pain forever; drowning.
When I found the girls (housemates) things started to change. I felt at home in the flat we rented. I felt happier to spend time on my own. I'd made new friends.
Christmas was hard. I didn't hear from him at all and that really hurt me. At a time for family and friends, I was silently recovering from losing someone I loved so deeply.
Our contact started up again late January; February.... happened and then he left London.
I thought I'd feel a sense of relief, like my feelings for him would leave my body, setting me free but that didn't happen. Instead I'd count the days in between conversations and purposefully not initiate contact.
March, April, May.
So much was happening for me at work, I could feel myself getting stronger and more confident, I finally had direction, a sense of purpose but he was still on my mind every night.
Then we had a chat and he told me his plans, it was all starting to fall into place, he was actually going. As much I liked hearing the news from the horse's mouth, knowing what was happening instead of wondering, it was like I kept picking at a scab trying to heal.
June. His last month in the UK.
The words he said... the words he didn't. And then he was gone.
I'd like to say that I'm moving on, I try to stay away but I always find myself giving in. I'm torn. My head knows what I need to do, I just can't seem to convince my heart.
I shouldn't have to wait. I shouldn't have to be a choice. I'm worth and deserve so much more? So WHY can't I let it go?
I know what will happen, it's happened before. I'll not let go because I'm SUCH a hopeless romantic and believe it will all work out and in 6 - 12 months he'll find someone else and I'll have to start from scratch.

A Year On: Taking Control
Last night before bed I did some Ab work. I intended on getting up this morning to do them again but I chose to stay in bed and snooze.
When I'm looking at exposing my stomach to the world in less than 6 weeks, I really need to make defining them a priority but I guess I can't want it that bad if I opt to sleep over having a decent brekkie and a quick workout before my morning shower.
I had M&S cornflakes instead for breakfast, which by the way taste nothing like Kellogg's. In fact they are thicker and therefore chewier. I don't like them. I meant to pick up my smoothie from the fridge to have on the bus ride in but forgot it.
So now it's 11.12 am and I've already had my fruit snack. My stomach is crying for some food but I refuse to give in and have my crisps - I just cannot condone snacks like that before noon.
I plan to do some interval training tonight to get my sweat on and follow that up by some weights. Squats & lunges are on my mind…. as well as lunch. What's the canteen got on the menu today? Fish… might need to go to the salad bar and get some chicken or a damn burrito - I'm verging on HANGRY.
Four hours later
I stuffed my face.
Had a curried chicken stir-fry/paella-esque thing with roasted vegetables and roasted chicken. It was delicious.
Enjoyed a cup of tea, whittled my unread emails down by half and finally finished the report for my boss with a working table of contents, which I had to Google in order to get working.
I've also asked a boy out.
the decision came from a little bit of peer pressure but also, I just need to get out there. I spend most of my free time on the sofa, which isn't healthy.
I'm in my early 30's, I'm good looking, smart and funny. I'm wasted sitting at home, even if I'm there with the girls. It's time I put on my gladrags and stepped out into the world, I've got enough clothes for it after all #guilty #ebaying.
No response yet but at least I'm taking control.
And on that note, I really need to review my coaching action points....

Just Hold On
Straight to the heart
No planned diversions
Words fired at speed
They're impact dead certain
The wall, it then crumbles
Just debris at my feet
Torn and now exposed
A soul incomplete
A remedy made available
For all this heartache
I was caught with my guard down
Vulnerable, awake
Now here we are
where damage is done at close range
Questioning the future
Regrets we cannot change
Straight to the heart
Sudden tears of relief
I am not unloved
I am not

Still...
Finally taking that stroll
The one I spoke of for so long
The sun streaming through the gaps of the trees
The wind blowing against my skin, pushing my cardigan away from my body
Mellow guitar cords strumming in my ears
Making the perfect soundtrack
All these elements create a feeling inside of me that I just can't shake
Like it's haunting me
Life is going on around me
Happy, smiling
Painful, sad
A group of girls giggling
A father pushing a buggy
Lads playing football
And me, the observer of life

The Worst
There's something going on that I just cannot explain.
I'm scared to admit that I feel the familiar creepings of depression setting in.
I've lost all energy and motivation. In fact I have the strongest urge to run away and hide somewhere until I feel normal again.
I felt this particular instinct back in September when I couldn't see the wood from the trees after the break up. I feel overwhelmed and emotional, lost and helpless.
I'm sitting in front of my computer just staring at it, empty - well obviously right now I'm typing this so I guess it's not as empty as I'm making out but you get the picture.
I suddenly feel as though my life is over.
All around me people are moving on, moving up and I feel stuck in the same place just watching from the side lines. And the worst thing about it is I just don't know where I want to go. I have the power to change my situation and I just don't know what I want to change it to...
Family
Money
FEAR
Laziness
Time... Time...
Do you ever wish you could rewind 10 years and try it all again?

Emotions
When something amazing happens to you, you're naturally sad when it's all over. It was like a flashback and I revelled in it, enjoying every second.
Like the last few warm rays of sunlight caressing my skin, I closed my eyes and felt the tingle spread from head to toe.
And though that light has gone and I'm left in the shadows; the chill bringing goosebumps to the surface, my arm hairs standing on end, a smile lingers on my lips as the memory replays in my mind.
Though you cannot start reading the next chapter if you keep rereading the last one, it's hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.
Today the sun is shining and it's a new beginning - for us both.
I've plans for a little wine this evening, lots of laughter and dancing with friends old and new. I feel as though Spring has blessed me with a touch of her love.

I can lie to everyone but not to myself
How do I feel now he's actually leaving?
Six months ago I would have been an absolute wreck. The mere idea that I would never see him again filled me with such loneliness.
I don't feel sad, I don't feel relieved, I haven't cried... yet. Truth is, until this post, I haven't really given it much thought. I've over-analysed what has been said, implied, written, allowed 'what ifs' more space in my head than has most probably been healthy. So, for the most part, I'm numb.
Though not living together, still living in the same city made me feel safe. Like, there was still a chance. Now he's packing up and leaving town... As it happens, we've only seen each other three times since I moved out in September, and hey, I'm still standing.
Guess I'm a lot stronger than I give myself credit for.
We spoke on the phone the other night, for over an hour, and to begin with it was 'tres' awkward. I had a lot of resentment. How dare he contact me after yet another stint of silence, and expect me to be all chatty and normal? So I acted aloof... for all of 5 minutes because to be honest, I can't be arsed.
I've imagined what it would be like to hear that he was with someone else and truthfully, it made me feel sick. Friends and family have questioned whether our break up was down to there being someone else and to start with I was 100% sure that it wasn't; but when a person you spend every day with, confide in, share a bed, a life with, suddenly (for you) decides that they no longer want to be with you, how sure can you really be?
However, despite what has happened between us, the good, the bad and the ugly, I still love this person. With every day that passes, a little less in the romantic sense of the word, mainly because my heart is finally accepting what the head already knows, but he taught me SO much and we shared a lot in our time together. At the end of the day, he just wants to be happy. Who am I to resent him for that?
So we chatted, and we laughed. He still knows me so well and it made me happy to speak with him.
He said that I'll find happiness with someone else, and I have no doubt I will. Will I be happier than when I was with him...? Who knows.
There's a quote about exes being friends.
I'd really like to believe that love can still exist between two past lovers without it being so black and white but maybe it would be healthier to cut all ties and start from scratch.

Over before it began
Whatever happened to men wooing women?
When exactly did the tables turn and the woman had to ask the man out for a date? I've heard the term "if you want something doing..." but this is a tad ridiculous.
At my age, I'm sorry to say, it's slim pickings. If they haven't got children already, they have serious baggage AND men just do not dust their shoulders off and get back on the relationship saddle in the same way that women do.
I mean, look at me; heart ripped from chest, stamped on, set alight and then promptly shoved back into my chest barely still beating, and yet I'm riding that old mare as if I never fell.
However, all my 'big and brave' talk means absolutely nothing when I'm trotting in a field full of seemingly gay horses. Obviously I'm not being literal but seriously, when did men making the first move become extinct?
I'm not looking to jump into another relationship by any means, I'm only just starting to enjoy this time on my own. I've managed to make working out into a habit, although like washing my hair I don't look forward to it because it's such an effort, I know with time I'll start seeing some great results.
It's been the same getting over him.
At first it was hard to get up every morning, hard to spend time on my own but the more time that passed, the more distance I put between myself and that event, I started to feel more content and appreciative of the things that I already had in my life which made me happy.
And now, what would make me that little bit happier is a smidgen of male attention.
What?
I'm still a hot-blooded female, last time I checked, with a cracking smile and a great personality (no that doesn't mean I'm ugly).
Such a shame that all this chit chat about men being stronger than women only applies to the physical and even then, it's all relative.
Come on boys, take a chance.

The friend in need
One of my closest male friends, someone I hoped would be there for me when my world crashed around me, has recently found himself alone and heartbroken. He text me and said "I finally know how you felt".
And you know what?
I felt as though I had NO advice to give him.
Not because I hadn't learnt something from these past 6 months, but because nothing I say will help. EVERY day will be hard until one day you wake up and it's not so hard anymore.
I'm friends with both of them. They are both trying to cope with the loss of someone that means/meant everything to them.
All I could say was:
How much of that I actually believe, I don't know but it's how I feel.
The week leading up to yesterday I found myself scouring the net, reading 'how to get over/let go of your ex' articles in an effort to keep hold of my sanity. I've been like 'if I can preoccupy my mind by following a couple of things they suggest, I'll not feel so helpless and unwanted'.
I came across this article - Different Hearts, Same Heartbreak - and I thought, yes this is exactly how it feels.
So I hope they read this blog and the one I've linked to. It won't lessen the pain he's feeling but it helps (a minuscule amount) with the loneliness because everyone feels the same heartbreak…

All I could say was:
It'll take time lovely. Give yourself the space to grieve what you had.
My only advice is to keep your distance as much as possible for now. Plus, no one expects you to jump into anything just yet.
Love is a powerful drug, it takes a while for it all to work out of your system. I'm not fully recovered yet, but I'm no longer so under Love's influence that I can't see doing what I need to do is the best thing for me right now.
Look after you and rest will work itself out x

The Date
I've decided to accept that I simply cannot control my heart. It wants what it wants.
Kind of like when my body craves chocolate or sugary goods around the time of the month all women, and possibly men too, hate.
So drawing on the limited learning I've gained from my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy course, I'm trying to change the way I interpret and respond to my surroundings.
Step 1: Be more active in terms of socialising and 'putting oneself out there'
Step 2: Strike up conversation with someone (a guy)
Step 3: Exchange numbers
Step 4: If you're not totally weirded out by the guy, set up a date
Step 5: Go on said date
So, that's what I've done; I've gone on my first date… It wasn't terrible but I'd rather not do it again.

He'll probably google my name now and read this but I have to be honest.
It wasn't him, I just didn't feel anything and in fact, we spent a great deal talking about our exes. Today was his ex's birthday and my 6th month anniversary. Dates to be remembered and not for the 5 beers and forced conversation.
Still, I did it and it was relatively painless... about as fun as a wax, which reminds me...

Metal and Dust
I'm not very good at letting go. I flirt with the idea of moving on every now and again but I've yet to give it my best shot.
The thing is, I'm still 'in love' with what was. The future hasn't won me over just yet.
I think I secretly like hurting myself, reliving the moments I cherished the most, the ones that give me the most pain... How f***ed up is that?
Yesterday I cried because he didn't text me Merry Christmas... It's been five months! I should be stronger than that and yet I'm aware that a year ago today we moved into our flat.
I got teary listening to London Grammar's version of Nightcall as I was travelling to meet a friend to do something FUN!
I'm SO sick of this.
If I've learnt anything it's that the more you love, the more it hurts when it ends - so just don't bother.

Who says NO to love?
I'm craving the physical contact of being in a relationship.
I want to feel the warmth and strength of a mans arms around me, the fullness of his lips against my skin and soft words whispered in my ear.
I miss the feeling of being loved, even as I sleep.
The comfort of a lazy arm across my waist as I wake, breath on the back of my neck and our bodies in mirrored positions, my back to your front.
Legs tangled casually on a sofa, hands held as you stroll down the road, foreheads touching as you fall asleep.
These are the things that can ease a heavy heart, lighten a dark day.
